Warhammer Online First Impressions

Don't know what to do with yourself until Lich King drops? Ever wondered what the baby of WoW and Dark Age of Camelot would look like? Tired of Age of Conan already? Have I got the MMO for you.

Warhammer Online (WAR) is finally here. I represents years of development by Mythic Entertainment, creators of Dark Age of Camelot. Now, I was hesitant before purchasing DAoC... it didn't hold my attention for long and I couldn't really get into the Realm vs. Realm (RvR) stuff. PvP generally annoys me, being more of a PvE guy. Whew. That's enough acronyms for now.

I am delighted to say that after about 20 hours and 14 levels as a Dark Elf Sorceress, WAR is good. Really good, actually, but not without it's flaws. Here's a quick rundown on what I like and what I don't.

GOOD:
RvR is actually fun! I've been kicking some Order tail on a regular basis.
The class selection/variety is great.
The environments are nice so far and seem to be getting cooler as I level.
Opening sequence is cool and gives a good intro to the abilities of the classes.
Level progression and difficulty curve have been smooth and mostly painless.
Lots to do, no matter what you're into.

BAD:

Some of the quests are a bit buggy.
I went 14 levels before getting different-looking equipment.
Queues for RvR seem to be getting longer and longer.
For a next gen MMORPG, it doesn't look that great overall.
Needs more detailed graphics customization and tweaks.

UGLY:
The character customization is unbelievably lacking. Yuck. 5 nasty faces, 5 hideous hairstyles, a few skin colors and that's about all you get. I guess I was spoiled by Age of Conan.

Well, that's my rundown. RvR has been done and done right so kudos to Mythic. I just hope they can offer players more customization options and armor variety. This is key if I'm going to get (and stay) invested in my character. I'm definitely enjoying myself and I will keep playing for a bit. At least until November 13th.
