Infinite Undiscovery Review

Infinite Undiscovery

The first in the new line of Square-Enix RPGs for the Xbox 360. Infinite Undiscovery, a play on 'unknown discoveries', joins the relatively small but growing genre on Microsoft's nextgen platform. Come see what 'undiscovers' we have found with this title.

Capell, a young flute player, is tossed into prison due to bearing a striking likeness to Lord Sigmund, the Liberator, leader of the rebellion against the Order of Chains who has forcibly seized control over the world. Cue Aya, a young archer who busts Capell out of prison and signs him up with the liberation, nearly against his will.

Graphics
Certainly a nextgen JRPG, you will not have any resentful upscaled feelings towards Infinite Undiscovery. The characters may seem like cliche RPG archetypes, but given the amount to choose from, its not worth a second thought. I was impressed by some of the sizes of the outdoor areas in the game.

Sound
The voices, the terrible voices. You will probably enjoy the game more with voices off, especially when hearing some battle skill shouts over and over.

Gameplay
Battles are action-based, being a tri-ace developed game, where you can rack up crazy combos. You will only control Capell directly, but through Connect Abilities, you can use skills from your other party members directly. This feels strange and not very smooth but understandable as a way to let the player control other party members on the fly. I would have preferred a full hot swap between party members though. I never tired of the battles, but some may find the sword sheathing required to be a burden. You must put away your sword to talk, open doors, chests, etc and you run faster with it put away as well. The item creation is different and needed a queue system for processing lots of scrap materials. To craft items, or even go to the menu screen, you must do it live, the world does not stop while in the menus.

Overall
Ultimately, this is a pretty active action-RPG. I do not feel its groundbreaking, but certainly a must play for any RPG fans craving HD, if you can forgive the voices. One final note, more main characters that like being touched by women, bravo Capell.
