I figure, instead of creating a topic every time Jack Thompson does something incredibly stupid, or make a game topic about a game you don't really care about but want to inform people that a demo is up, or announce that this company is suing another game company or this company is changing its name and all that sort of thing you can just link it and discuss it here.

So, in this topic we announce bits of things, can discuss it or what have you. Basically like the general conversation thread but exclusively for gaming news and opinions. Doesn't have to be news, you can post your "OMG WTF BBQ! GUESS WHAT I JUST DID IN THIS GAME!" moments or whatever.

No spoilers or plot point discussions. Create game topics and use the quote and white text method for that sort of thing. Just to avoid unnecessary accidents and spoilers.

To kick things off, we can discuss the Price point of the "Halo 3" Xbox 360. It won't include a copy of Halo 3. A smaller drive than the elite as well.

Verdict: Not worth it at that price. For a few bucks more you can get a PS3, which defeats the cheaper price point of the 360, plus the harddrive is smaller, so you might as well get an elite and get a Halo 3 faceplate.

Wait. ~$600 USD, which is the same price as the 80gig PS3, for a 360 with a 20gig HDD? That's just stupid. It's a 360 Pro with a play&charge kit bundled into it, for $150 more. The only possible reasons to buy this thing is if one is a), a die-hard Halo fan, or b) one fully intends to e-bay that sucker for a stupidly large amount of money once the supply runs out.

I think the biggest mistake is not bundling Halo 3 with it. I know the excuse is "But we dunno which version the consumer wants." Well I think MS should just throw in the legendary edition if someone is willing to blow $600 on this. Not that it matters though. This thing is going to sell like hotcakes.

Apparently the Medal of Honor: Airborne demo is on the Live Marketplace plus you can get the PC demo at any demo download site. Personally, I like Filefront.

Also, a The Settlers Rise of an Empire Demo, is up. If you like real-time town-building sims. The videos of the game looked pretty fun. Both demos, like all demos these days, are over a gig is size.

They need to make a GOOD video game about Frankie's 300, this PSP bullshit incites a terrible rage.

I've played the Folklore demo that they put up on the Playstation Store today. It's quite awesome, surprisingly. Very Miyazaki-esque with the designs of the netherworld. The girl character plays in an Alice and Wonderland (or Howl's Moving Castle, completely with scarecrow guide), very mystical and elegant. While the guy plays in a Hell purgatory setting, with lots of fire. The place is basically one big warzone.

It uses the sixaxis pretty well, as you "fish" the Folk's souls out so you can use them in battle, or strengthen your current Folks' karma (unlocks more attacks or more attack power, ect.). The girl requires you to jerk the controller up as the soul flashes red. While with the guy you have to steer the controller left and right and basically bash the soul into submission before you reel it in.

I suggest you people with PS3s check it out. I was pleasantly surprised by the demo.

I'm watching the new Killzone 2 movies up at gametrailers.com and they're awesome. The wall textures aren't quite up to snuff, but beyond that, the lighting, animation and atmosphere are pretty incredible. I suggest you check them out if you have any interest in the game.

Check them out

Also, Manhunt given a M rating. Due out October 31st. Good news for those looking to get the game.

And finally, it seems like many developers and publishers such as Microsoft and Sony will not attend E for Everyone. So, you won't see anything from them there. Nintendo and Konami are going though, EA as well. It's the E3 for consumers.

Found a couple of interesting things today...

http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/23/new-castlevania-coming-to-mobile-phones-in-september/

Quote:
Castlevania coming to mobile phones in September

Konami is bringing an original Castlevania title to mobile phones due out September 18. Order of Shadows, is being built specifically for mobile and features a new storyline and original soundtrack, according to the press release (via IGN).

The game is being made in cooperation with series head Koji Igarashi and will feature the Belmont clan. Look for Castlevania: Order of Shadows on T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon and "other major carriers" next month. In the meantime, make your own Castlevania subtitle with this handy program.

That's for the Castlevania fans out there.

Also it would appear that APF2K8 is not the only competition for Madden now...

http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/23/new-football-game-backbreaker-uses-euphoria-tech/

Quote:
New football game Backbreaker uses euphoria tech

You've heard a lot about euphoria lately, especially from LucasArts, which is using the real-time animation generating software on everything from Indiana Jones to The Force Unleashed. You're even going to see it (someday) in Grand Theft Auto IV. Now, NaturalMotion, the company behind the software, has announced that they're working on a football game called Backbreaker utilizing the euphoria technology.

Predictably, the tackling looks great, and we're assured that the the footage in the video below the jump is generated on a next-gen console with euphoria, so we're pretty confident that they've got the tackling down. In fact, if creating a football game were just about how good your tackles looked, NaturalMotion would have a blue ribbon in their future. Unfortunately, there's passing and catching and stuff, so we have to withhold judgment. (On a side note, this is one football game that can't blame EA for their lack of a license. We think the NFL would have a hard time giving their blessing to a game named for the breaking of backs.) Anyway, check out the trailer and let us know what you think.

The official site is here...

There's an interesting video as well.

For those afraid to plunge into PS2 import waters because they don't want to mod their system, fear no more.

http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=19915

Quote:
The power of an advanced PS2 Mod Chip in a Plug ‘n Play PS2 Memory Card – VAST!!!

120 million PS2/PStwo consoles prepare to become modded via the use of a plug ‘n play advanced custom memory card! A new product is preparing to be launched within the next two weeks which gives PS2/PSTwo owners all the functions of an advanced PS2 mod chip but directly from an advanced memory card. That means no masses of wires to be soldered, no voiding of the warranty, just a simple insertion of a special memory card known as ‘Vast’ which will fully unlock ANY PS2 console just as would a hard wired mod chip would do so. The product essentially exploits a flaw in the PS2 memory card system and uses MagicGate technology which means that the totally innovative design will be 100% secure. When inserted, the following operating system will boot giving any PS2/Two access to a wealth of features. For the time being, enjoy the following screenshots of the OS, we are expecting our insider to leak more information and media to us exclusively at MaxConsole as the launch draws ever closer.

Sounds sweet if you ask me. With PS2 game prices steadily dropping, this would be a good opportunity to pick up some imports you may have missed out on, or for new ones arriving from the land of the rising sun.

Play Asia is a great place to pick up imports, BTW. Good prices and they ship super fast.

Sounds cool. I do my import shopping at Play-Asia myself. Wink If I didn't already have a Japanese PS2 I might give this a shot. Very Happy

Though looking at the screenshot I notice a couple of things, first the Region Free DVD feature looks interesting. My Japanese PS2 is like an original and doesn't have the DVD feature fully functioning so this could help me with that. And is there something about external HDD's in there? Shocked

Anyone know of any good freeware games you could run off a thumb-drive? Or any game?
